Belfast Pops Orchestra

The Belfast Pops Orchestra is a not-for-profit organisation with the objectives of allowing professional and amateur musicians based in the greater Belfast area to perform fantastic repertoire whilst raising money for local charities. The orchestra was set up in 2011 by Dr Paul Berry, Dr Stephen Cullen and Mr Colin Scott and is comprised of approximately 60+ players who are committed and challenged to give their best performance in a demanding, supportive, non-competitive atmosphere. Opportunities to play together, not only provide unforgettable experiences for the participants, but also serve to enrich our community and audiences by bringing music and its benefits to a wider audience.

Whilst the Belfast Pops Orchestra is rooted in classical music,  the ‘Pops’ in the name stands for ‘popular’ as much of the repertoire performed is drawn from contemporary popular culture with an aim to give our eclectic audiences an orchestral experience that evokes a spectrum of emotions, leaving a lasting impact on our listeners.

Throughout the years, the orchestra has performed throughout Belfast to wide and varied audiences, raising tens of thousands of pounds. They perform on average, twice per year and whilst they were stopped in their tracks due to the pandemic, they are all grateful to be back playing together again. They have been honoured to welcome both local and international soloists to join them on stage including world renowned violinist, Patrick Rafter and local singer and theatre director, James Huish.
